FLOOD
Definition of a Flood by FEMA

Heavy storm rain, hurricanes and river overflows can cause a flood at any time of the year. Floods generally develop over a 1-2 day period  when there is too much rainwater to flow into rivers, lowlands or your backyard. However, they
can happen very quickly when lots of heavy rain falls over a short period of time.

Only 20% of American homes at risk for floods are covered by flood insurance. In certain flood-prone areas, the Federal Government requires flood insurance to secure mortgage loans backed by federal agencies such as the FHA and VA.  The lack of flood insurance can be detrimental to many homeowners who may discover only after the damage has been done that their standard insurance policies do not cover flooding. This can be brought on by landslides, hurricanes, earthquakes, or other natural disasters that cause flooding.

EARTHQUAKE
Definition of Earthquake by the USGS

You may need earthquake insurance even if they are not common in your area. They can happen anywhere and at anytime.

Basic homeowners’, condo and rental insurance policies do not cover damage caused by an earthquake, but coverage can be purchased as an endorsement to your homeowners’ type policy or a separate policy. Earthquake insurance doesn’t pay for losses from fire, explosion, flood, tidal wave etc.

Your policy will cover the cost to repair and replace your damaged property and prior to purchase you should determine what the policy will pay for (main home, garage, other structures and their contents, living expenses if the home is seriously damaged or destroyed. Most importantly are the policy exclusions, limitations and deductibles. Earthquake insurance rates are calculated differently by each insurance company and vary depending on various rating factors.  Call for a quote!!!
